We have used the AR program for at least 8 years. It has its pros and cons. I believe it is great for 1-3 grades and we see the most success with it in those grades. K has begun a pilot program with students reading and being read to. It is working very well this year. First grade begins 2nd quarter and uses the point system. By the time they get to 4-5th grades, we have probably 60% in 4th meeting goals and less than 50% in 5th. It is voluntary, so through trial and error we don't 'make' them read for not making their goal. We have quarterly celebrations as well as end of year celebrations if they meet goal with 85% comprehension or higher 3 out of 4 quarters.
Food coupons, erasers, shopping sprees, playtime at the park with principal, Bubbles and eating lunch with principal, game time are some of the quarterly
celebrations. Yearly celebrations include movie at theater, skating, bowling and zoo trips. Please call if I can answer any other questions. LeAnn E.
